The rare chatoyant tourmalines in this double-strand, one-of-a-kind necklace remind me of a deep ocean and the mysterious life thriving in its depths. The bronze bead is like a piece of ancient coral, hand-carved with a verdigris patina. Expanding on the idea of water, the iridescent dark green stones are paired with a scattering of lighter Beryl Emerald stones that have mysterious inclusions. The transition is like swimming in deep water where the light plays tricks and the waters are charged with luminous layers of lush green colors.

The "Cat's Eye" green tourmaline beads from Brazil exhibit the phenomenon called chatoyancy, an optical occurrence in which light is reflected off of parallel needle-like inclusions of microscopic tubes or crystals of another mineral inside the gemstone. These inclusions interfere with the passage of light throughout the crystal, scattering and reflecting light back to the viewer as thin lines.
